When
and at what time do kids learn best?
Kids
spend 26 percent of their time in school. Kids spend between 40-50
percent of their time in non-school
hours at their own discretion. It is the general belief of many adults
that kids just want to hang out and have fun. The opposite is true.
Kids
crave experience and productivity. (A Matter of Time Study in 1992).
The Mission
The
mission of the Multicultural Arts Institute is to build assets
in the lives of youth in the Kanawha Valley through the arts.
Our Principles
The Multicultural Arts Institute
is unique in a number of ways. The guiding principles of the Institute
is that
children and youth
are resources, not problems; creativity and invention build their assets
and therefore prevent at-risk behaviors; sustained participation, performances,
and high quality productions will further shape their growth, skills,
ideas, and confidence. The philosophy of teaching and learning is to
give skills and to facilitate their learning. Multicultural approaches
are integrated in all of the art mediums. This is accomplished during
non-school hours through summer camps and evening training classes.
Our Purpose
The Multicultural Arts Camp is an intensive one week day camp which aims to
build assets in the lines of children through the arts.
The Curriculum
The modular curriculum includes visual arts, singing, movement, speech,
recorders, Orff instruments, unpitched percussion, strings, band,
and dance. Highly
trained faculty transforms a group of individuals into a team of performers
by week's end. The curriculum will be centered around Multicultural music.
